Why won't my garage door open or close?
Your garage door may be of the highest quality, but you may still experience problems opening and closing it from time to time. This can happen with both manual and automatic doors and there are some commons reasons that could be causing the issue.
We've looked at the main reasons a garage door won't open across manual and electric doors and provided some helpful solutions.
Manual Doors
One of the main reasons that your door won't open or close is that the release mechanism on the door has become jammed. In this case check that there isn't anything blocking it on the inside. If not, it is likely to be a mechanic issue. If it makes strange noises or feels stiff, these are tell-tale signed that there is a track problem. This means the rollers aren't running smoothly along the tracks, which can be caused by obstructions or dirt so try cleaning the tracks or seek professional advice.
If your door isn't lubricated properly, over time it may stop operating properly so this is also something to check for, which can be easily resolved. If the door becomes very heavy to lift then this may be caused by a broken torsion spring.
Electric
It may sound obvious but make sure it's plugged into a working outlet as this will stop it from opening and closing. Another common issue which will stop an electric door opening or closing is a broken spring or cable. Have a look for any obvious breaks or gaps as these will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
Just as with manual doors, you need to ensure that the tracks are functioning smoothly. Make sure the tracks aren't out of shape or that there isn't excessive dirt on them. Clean them or try and put back into shape. Another issue to look out for is a problem with the remote control. If all the mechanisms are in good working order, it is worth checking the remote. Check that the battery isn't dead or sometimes they need reprogramming. Finally, check for any obstacles that may be causing the door not to open or close.
